Well you're the grand one, didn't you notice? When you're walking, all the fairy boys are pale and nervous...

Brian Slade
...Maxwell Demon
There were times when it appeared to Dorian Gray that the whole of history was merely the record of his own life, not as he had lived it in act and circumstance, but as his imagination had created it for him, as it had been in his brain and in his passions. He felt that he had known them all, those strange terrible figures that had passed across the stage of the world and made sin so marvelous and evil so full of subtlety. It seemed to him that in some mysterious way their lives had been his own.
The picture of Dorian Gray[Oscar Wilde]

About Velvet Goldmine:
1971: Glamrock explodes all over the world and challanges the seriousness within the flowerpower generation by means of glitter and brutal music. Brian Slade, a young rockstar, inspires numerous teenage boys and girls to paint their nails and explore their own sexuality. In the end Slade destroys himself. Unable to escape the role he created for himself, he plots his own murder. When his fans discover that the murder is a fake, his star falls and he is forgotten about.
1984: Arthur, a journalist working for a New York newspaper, gets assigned the story about the fake murder of Brian Slade. When Arthur was young and grew up in Manchester, he was more than a fan of Slade. Reluctantly he accepts the assignment and starts to investigate what happened to his old glamrock hero.

In Hearts and Minds:
Brian arrives at the village from the peak of his career, before everything falls apart (approximately 1972, '73). He is only just becoming consumed by his alter ego Maxwell Demon. His purpose in the village is to rediscover his humanity, and what his ultimate message to the world is.
"For once there was an unknown land, full of strange flowers and subtle perfumes, a land of which it is joy of all joys to dream, a land where all things are perfect and poisonous." [Oscar Wilde]
